Anne Boelyn Calls herself a Gentlewoman
Below is an interesting quote, from one of my favorite Excellent Women:
“Commend me to His Majesty and tell him that he hath
ever been consistent in his career of advancing me; from
a private gentlewoman he made me a marchioness, from a marchioness a
queen and now that he hath left no other degree of honour he gives my
innocence the crown of martyrdom” (Lofts 177).
This is one of the earliest uses of the term "gentlewoman" I have found.
